81 Room Resort profile
When folks say "Colorado get-away" - this is what they mean.
Sweeping meadows, meandering creeks, the rustle of pine boughs. You sink deep into a leather armchair in front of the crackling fire and wonder why you've not been here before - or how soon until you can come back. The drive from Denver was easy and man, is this wine good. Since 1938, cowboys and poets and ranchers and cityfolk and Nordic skiers have escaped to Devil's Thumb Ranch. Something about the way the Continental Divide looks down on the unfettered land draws people. Or maybe it's the spa treatments?
We hope you'll join us to discover your own kind of get-away. We've got two restaurants, a spa, some of the best cross-country trails in North America and beds that make the earliest of birds roll over and hit snooze.
West of Denver, just minutes from Winter Park - but a world away from everything.
Lodging at Devil's Thumb Ranch
Private cabins, cozy lodge rooms and the most comfortable beds this side of the Pecos. The Lodge at Devil's Thumb Ranch
Our Lodge was designed in the architectural style known as "Parkitecture" in honor of nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. The Lodge offers cozy single rooms and multi-room suites, a cafe, pub/bistro, fitness center, theater, a six-sided, three-story fireplace constructed from stones gathered from a rockslide near the Ranch, and even a miniature bowling alley. Like our cabins, it is stocked with rustic furniture, soft down pillows, warm bathrobes and other amenities. With so much to do, you may not even notice that our rooms and cabins do not have televisions. If you need to check in with the real world, there are televisions in our game room and Heck's Tavern. Portable monitors and complimentary DVD rentals are also available.Cabins at Devil's Thumb Ranch
Snuggled into the forest on the ridgetop overlooking our meadow, our cabins range in size from intimate one bedroom lofts perfect for romantic get-aways to spacious four bedroom cabins with full kitchens and two baths - just the thing for friends and family retreats and reunions. All our cabins are furnished with hand-chosen antiques, down bedding and fireplaces. Many of our cabins are dog-friendly if you're traveling with your furry friend. See detailed descriptions or give us a call and we'll help you choose just the right one. In order to ensure you get the most from your Colorado mountain vacation, our cabins do not have televisions. Most guests tell us they are too busy enjoying the great outdoors and each other that they don't even notice. We do provide portable monitors and complimentary DVDs at your request.Bunkhouse at Devil's Thumb Ranch
And our charming former lodge? The original Elk lodge at Devil's Thumb Ranch was moved down the road a couple of miles and has been repurposed as a bunkhouse, our self-service lodging option. Designed for the budget-conscious traveler, the Bunkhouse includes nine rooms with private bath, four rooms with a shared bath, and two small common areas. The rooms are a bit smaller, but certainly cozy, allowing our guests access to recreation, dining, spa, and events offered at the Ranch. Children under the age of sixteen are not allowed in the bunkhouse. At this time, the bunkhouse is NOT dog-friendly. If you're traveling with Rover, please request a dog-friendly cabin. A television with satellite service is offered in the common area, but there are not televisions in guest rooms at The Bunkhouse.
Ranch Creek Spa
Some guests come just for a Colorado spa vacation, others are here for the outdoor activities and realize there's nothing like a little pampering after a hard day of cross-country skiing or hiking. Our beautiful 10,000 square foot spa is located in a quiet corner of the meadow in its own building overlooking the Ranch. It has eight treatment rooms, including a 700 square foot couples suite, a yoga lookout studio, and separate men's and women's locker rooms, each with steam rooms. Our spa gift shop features a variety of botanical and organic skin treatment products as well as a fun selection of designer jewelry, yoga clothing, bags, gifts, artwork and more. Whether it's a hot stone massage, an exfoliating body scrub, a high altitude facial or one of our couples relaxation treatments, the Ranch Creek Spa offers just the thing to revive and rejuvenate.
Our Spa features products made from all-natural ingredients. Tested in the harshest mountain climates, they're perfect for skin that's spent a day in the great Rocky Mountain outdoors. If you're at the Ranch, please do drop by and see us for a treatment, yoga class, or a tour.
After a long day of skiing or fly fishing, nothing is better than thawed, processed food full of preservatives, right? We don't think so either.
That's why we use only the freshest ingredients possible, ensuring a flavorful and healthy dining experience. Produce is grown locally when possible. Seafood is flown in fresh. Beef and pork come from high-end suppliers of humanely raised organic meats. All desserts, sauces and salads are homemade from scratch.
It's not the easiest way to do it. But it is the best way. Visit us at Ranch House Restaurant & Saloon, Heck's Restaurant or for a special dinner in John Ls Wine Cellar. We think you'll agree that we're on to something.
Ranch House Restaurant
Folks in Grand County know that if it's a special occasion, there's really only one place to go. Ranch House Restaurant at Devil's Thumb Ranch sits rather unpretentiously on the edge of a sweeping meadow with the Continental Divide above, and worn hardwood floors below. You see, it's located in the original homestead that was built on the Ranch in the 1930s. We like to think that when those early pioneers picked the spot for their home, it was chosen for it's magnificent views - elk and moose wander by, the stars blanket the sky like you'll never see in a city.
We also like to think that those early Ranchers knew a thing or two about eating well. And we carry on the tradition with style at Ranch House Restaurant. We serve New American Mountain Cuisine here - which means real food, cooked with real ingredients. Organic and locally grown whenever we can. Always fresh, always delicious.Stop in and see us, won't you? We think you'll feel right at home here, just like the folks who homesteaded it all those years ago.
Heck's at the Ranch
HECK'S - a.k.a. “Hex” - a six sided shape with equidistant lengths, relatively concentric with a center point. That's the definition. Here's the history....
The hexagonal room that houses Heck's is a replication of a room in one of our country's national monuments, The Timberline Lodge located at the base of Mt. Hood, Oregon.
We visited the Timberline Lodge in 1999, about the same time we contracted to purchase the Ranch. Taken by the sheer expanse and natural beauty of the hex room at Timberline, we felt there were few buildings that built today with that type of grand and inspiring craftsmanship. After that visit, including a hexagonal room as a centerpiece became the focus in planning the Lodge here at Devil's Thumb Ranch.
If you look at the room's architecture, you will notice several unique attributes, including Cascade arches, pegged beams and butterfly pegs. The giant posts and beams are Douglas Fir from Vancouver Island. The siding is Larch. The floor (which is heated by environmentally-friendly geothermal sources) is reclaimed spruce. The stone used to build the fireplace is from a nearby rock slide - and is the same stone used for the fireplace in the original 1937 Ranch homestead, which is now Ranch House Restaurant. We hope that your visit to the Ranch, and in particular, the time you spend in Heck's, will serve to inspire and renew you.
Even cowboys love coffee.
Whether you start your day with a double nonfat mochiatto latte whip or a cuppa joe...
The friendly folks at Hallowed Grounds Coffee Shop are happy to serve your favorites. They offer breakfast pastries and breads, a full selection of coffee, latte, chai, juice, beer, wine and more, plus daily selections of hearty soups and sandwiches. You'll be in and out in no time and back to the trails, the pool, your book - whatever's waiting.Located in the Lodge, just across the way from the Ski Shop - stop in and visit!
A rustic ranch experience.
Except with cozy chairs, great food, wine and beers, of course.
Situated in the original 1937 homestead, the Saloon at Ranch House Restaurant couldn't be more of a real Colorado mountain ranch experience. A legend of Winter Park dining, the grub is quite a bit better than cowboys might have savored over a campfire, but we think you'll appreciate it.With a tasty menu and a wide selection of cocktails, wine and beers, it's just the place for relaxing after a day at the Ranch.
A whole new way to wine and dine.
Our wine cellar is not only well stocked with vintages to complement any meal in the Ranch House Restaurant or Saloon, it's also an intimate and elegant private dining room with a bit of history built right in. The beautiful cherry wine racks and beams were crafted from 150-year-old cherry trees harvested on the owner's family land in Adirondack Park in New York. Known hereabouts as John Ls' Wine Cellar, it's named in memory of two family members.
To get to the wine cellar dining room, you have to pass through the The Barrel, a hand-crafted wine uncorking room, just more of the ambiance of John Ls'. It's a special place for special occasions.
Sure beats a boring conference room.
Heck, it beats just about any place on earth.
It's hard to inspire creativity or motivation in the same old place. But it comes naturally at Devil's Thumb Ranch. It's the perfect place to escape day-to-day concerns so you can get down to building a vision for your company and a team that can implement it.
In a meeting center built from two Civil War era barns, there are nuts and bolts business necessities like high speed Internet access, AV equipment, intimate conference rooms and presentation areas as well as a larger 2,900 square foot meeting room with 7 x 10 foot windows. And for the ever important between-meeting breaks, your team will be recharged by the fresh mountain air and view from our 2,200 sq foot deck overlooking the Continental Divide. There's also more intimate meeting spaces for smaller scale meetings.
For those of you seeking a bit of outdoor team building, it's all around us at Devil's Thumb Ranch. You can take beginner fly fishing lessons or use our ropes course, go hiking or golf on one of the three fine courses that are within a ten minute drive from the Ranch. Take a group horseback ride or cross-country ski lesson. And, for those staff members deserving special perks, there's the Ranch Creek Spa, for a unqiue Colorado spa vacation.
We know that after a full day of team building a good night's sleep is important to accomplishing your team's objectives. So, though your group will be in the middle of 5000 acres of raw Colorado, they won't be roughing it at night. In our cabins and lodge rooms they'll be treated to comfy down bedding, radiant heated floors, antiques from around the world and fireplaces.
Your group will also have access to our variety of fine on-site dining options ranging from an outdoor Western barbecue to an evening of fine dining in our private wine cellar. All meals are prepared from scratch and from the finest seasonal ingredients---organic whenever available. Since when was a business meeting a great Colorado mountain vacation?
