Lead our newest Select Service hotel located in Boston as a part of the Grand Opening Team.  We are currently seeking a Human Resources Manager for the opening of the Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown North End. Set to open in early 2018, the hotel will be known for its chic, urban design and decor with a sophisticated metropolitan flare. The 14-story, 220 guest room property, with 2500 sq. ft. of meeting space will be conveniently situated within walking distance of The TD Garden Arena (home of the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins), Boston’s Financial Center, and the Government Center. In addition, it will be minutes from both the Avalon North Station and Boston North Station.

Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown North End is part of Turnberry Associates. Turnberry Associates has built over 20 million square feet of retail space, more than 7,000 luxury condominium and condo-hotel units, 1.5 million square feet of class “A” office space, in excess of 3,000 hotel and luxury resort rooms, as well as a number of exciting new projects currently in various phases of development.

Position is based in Boston.

Position Overview

The Human Resources Manager is responsible to manage the functional areas of human resources department such as recruitment, selection, onboarding, employee database integrity, employee and industrial relations, and basic management reporting.  Partners with business leaders to deliver top notch service.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manages the recruitment and on-boarding process from beginning to end
  • Participate in recruiting events at schools, fairs and conferences
  • Networks with local organizations (e.g., Hotel Association and peers) to source candidates for current or future openings
  • Ensure recruitment and hiring practices are in compliance with all local, state, and federal employment laws
  • Responsible for recording and maintaining employee information in HRIS such new hire data, personal data, transfers, change of work status, etc


  • Supports departmental orientation program for employees to receive the appropriate new hire training to successfully perform their job
  • Ensures coordination and facilitation of new hire orientation program, brand mandated and other compliance trainings.
  • Ensures employees are cross-trained to support successful daily operations
  • Ensures and tracks brand training compliance
  • Uses all available on the job training tools for employees; supervise on-going training initiatives and conducts training, when appropriate
  • Facilitate any compliance related training such as anti-harassment, diversity and discrimination etc
  • Assists with the company-wide performance evaluation process


  • Facilitate the employee recognition programs
  • Facilitate and organize employee appreciation events

Employee Relations

  • Assists in maintaining a collaborative environment by utilizing an “open door” policy to acknowledge employee problems or concerns in a timely manner
  • Assists in maintaining effective employee communication channels in the property
  • Reviews progressive discipline documentation for accuracy and consistency, and checks for supportive documentation and is accountable for determining appropriate action
  • Work with Department Managers for resolution of employee issues/grievances
  • Assists with responding to questions concerning vacation and flex time benefits
  • Processes terminations in the employee database

Managing Legal and Compliance Practices

  • Ensures employee files are well secured and contain required employment paperwork and documentation
  • Ensures compliance with immigration regulations as it relates to employment. Responsible for tracking Form I-9 expirations and communicating status with employees and management.
  • Ensures compliance with procedure for accessing, reviewing, and auditing employee files and ensure compliance with the Privacy Act.
  • Ensures medical records are maintained in a separate, secure and confidential medical file
  • Manages Workers Compensation claims to ensure appropriate employee care and manage costs

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Implement Human Resources initiatives at Property
  • Creates value through proactive approaches that will affect performance outcome
  • Creates a collaborative environment by supporting effective communication channels and team based culture at Property

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The Team Member may be expected to work in other areas of the hotel when needed to assist operations to perform job duties not necessarily contained in this job description

Maintains strong influence within all hiring, training, performance evaluations, discipline and/or termination decisions.

Qualifications, Job knowledge, Experience, Skills, Abilities:

  • 4 Year College degree preferred in Human Resources
  • 3+ years of experience in hotel industry in Human Resources
  • Management experience required
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Outstanding analytical, communication, negotiation, collaboration, presentation, and project management skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of federal/state employment laws, including Title VII, ADA and FLSA Ability to apply Federal, State and local laws to real-life situations
  • Exposure to working in a unionized environment
  • Executive presence, professional demeanor, and strong business acumen
  • Possess expertise in industry related recruiting best practices
  • Extensive interviewing and sourcing experience
  • Candidate must have excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.  In addition they must be computer literate
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Strong administrative, communication, and organizational skills, with attention to detail
  • Ability to deal with employees, some of whom require high levels of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals 

Physical requirements of the position and work environment:

  •  Must be able to stand, walk, sit
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, crouch
  • Must use hands to reach, grasp, handle, pull and push
  • Must have good near and far vision
  • Must be able to hear, talk, smell
  • Majority of duties performed indoors.  Noise level moderate.
