The Washington Duke Inn & Executive Conference Center, a 4-diamond luxury property, is currently seeking an experienced Group Sales Manager.  Successful candidates are enthusiastic sales people who are goal driven, competitive types and love to succeed.  You must possess strong selling skills and a proven ability to close business.  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with current and potential clients via phone, email and in-person.  Must have a minimum of 2 years hotel sales experience.  Delphi experience preferred.

Responsibilities:  Responsible for sales solicitation on behalf of the hotel and conference center through direct solicitation calls on assigned accounts, solicitation on potential new accounts, participation in industry and civic organizations representing opportunities for new business.


  1. Reports to work dressed in proper attire and on time as outlined in the employee handbook.
  2. Constantly strive to maintain hotel standards.
  3. To respond promptly to all inquiries and correspondence from customers, prospects and lead referrals.
  4. To respond promptly to requests by the Director of Sales and Marketing for reports and other assignments.  To do own filing and trace follow-ups.
  5. To properly maintain files and accounts.  To attend all meetings assigned to the individual.
  6. To set up working relationships with other areas of the hotels operations such as Front Office, Reservations, Accounting, Catering and Conference Services.
  7. To be aware of the competition from other hotels within the local area.
  8. To follow-up with the client once the meeting is in progress, to ensure repeat business.
  9. Territorial responsibilities representing deployment plan.  Responsible for solicitation, negotiation, implementation and follow-up for the same.
  10. Understand the services provided by each department and the responsibilities of key individuals.
  11. Follow policies, procedures and standards as detailed in training manual and employee handbook.  Observe and practice safe working habits.
  12. Follow through with daily task list as assigned by Director.
  13. Supports and participates in hotel recycling program.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Sales and Marketing.
  15. Serve as the Manager on Duty when Scheduled

To do this kind of work, you must be able to:  Demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.

Physical Demands:  Lift 20 pounds maximum with frequent bending, lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 5 pounds. Required walking or standing to a significant degree.

Math Skills:  Requires mathematical development sufficient to be able to:  Apply fractions, percentages, ration and proportion.

Language Skills:  Must have developed English language skills to the point to be able to: 

Communicate effectively (both written and orally) with other employees, guests or vendors as needed.

Relationships to Data, People and Things:

Data:  Coordination: Determination of time, place and sequence of operations or actions to be taken on the basis of analysis of data, as well as executing determination and/or reporting on events.                    

People:  Determining or interpreting work procedures while maintaining harmonious relations and      promoting efficiency.  A variety of responsibilities are involved in this function.

Things:  Handling: Using body members, hand tools, and/or special devices to work, move or carry objects or materials.  Involves little or no latitude for judgment with regard to attainment of standards or in selecting appropriate tool, object or material.         

Specific Vocational Preparation: An occupationally significant combination of: vocational education, apprentice training, on the job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs.

To do this job you must have the following licenses or certifications before being hired: High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Related degree or certificate preferred.

To do this job you must have the following amount of total education and/or experience: 

Prefer two years minimum hotel sales experience or familiarity with hotel operations.  Must have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with people.  Must have proven ability to effectively manage details and take initiative in meeting program goals. Prefer some higher education.

NOTE:  This hotel operates seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.  I am aware that at times it will be necessary to move me from my accustomed shift if business demands.  I also understand that business determines the amount of hours I work.  Management retains the discretion to add or change the duties of this position at any time.

Discover the Celebrated History of the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club

The most prestigious hotel near Duke University, the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club first opened its doors in 1988 to serve the needs of the University and Durham’s growing business community. The hotel was named for Washington Duke (1820-1905), who from his modest beginnings as an American Civil War soldier in 1865 went onto become an industrialist and philanthropist, as well as a classic example of the American dream.

When Washington Duke returned from the Civil War to three motherless children, his land (Duke Homestead), a tobacco barn, a mule and fifty cents were his sole possessions. Duke, along with his sons James and Benjamin, transformed these meager assets into a family business that would grow to become the multinational corporation known as the American Tobacco Company.

After attaining financial success, Washington Duke began a life of community service and philanthropy. In 1891, he joined other local businessmen in bringing Trinity College to Durham and became its foremost benefactor. His son, James, created the Duke Endowment in 1924 and Trinity College was renamed Duke University in honor of Washington Duke.

The Duke family continues to uphold a long-standing tradition of community service, philanthropy and loyalty to Duke University, which is evident throughout the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.
