About This Job

Special Events Manager 

The Inn at St. John’s is looking for an experienced and highly motivated hospitality professional to join our social events team. The Special Events Manager reports to the Director of Sales and Marketing and is responsible for effectively selling private event, restaurant space and guestroom blocks for weddings and social events.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Sell and finalize social catering and guestroom business

  • Handle social catering inquiries and send out catering proposals, collateral and menus

  • Conduct site inspections and handle walk-in inquiries for future business

  • Negotiate food and beverage minimums and rental fees with clients

  • Generate sales agreements for business to secure event space

  • Maintain client contact and effective communication throughout the planning process to ensure the highest level of guest satisfaction

  • Work with the Director of Sales, Director of F&B and Executive Chef to ensure successful wedding receptions and social events

  • Detail events and generate Banquet Event Orders, resumes and diagrams for upcoming events.

  • Communicate all plans, details and arrangements for functions with responsible departments

  • Coordinate with preferred vendors catering support services (flowers, entertainment, decoration, A/V, etc.) to provide complete client satisfaction

  • Be present onsite at the start of each event to ensure proper event setup and satisfaction of client

  • Review banquet checks for accuracy post-event

  • Follow up with clients for client feedback

  • Attend internal wedding showcase menu tastings

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Sales & Marketing

 

Qualifications

Previous experience in hotel catering, restaurant event sales or convention services/event planning required.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Knowledge of the Delphi sales system is strongly preferred

  • A working knowledge of banquet/catering food and beverage service, policies and operations

  • Knowledge of general sales techniques, yield management, and customer service skills

  • Strong time management and organizational skills. Good conflict management skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and follow up skills

  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment


This position requires being available outside of the standard M - F business week. Due to the nature of the wedding and social business, Event Managers must work a flexible schedule which includes most Saturdays and occasional Sundays. Event Managers are required to work a minimum of 45 hours per week.

In October of 2000, the redevelopment of the main buildings into The Inn at St. John’s Conference Center created spaces for corporate and social conferences, wedding receptions and Catholic celebrations. December of 2005 saw the addition of a Grande ballroom space with room for up to 450 guests. The center features stately Romanesque architecture, beautifully renovated to reflect its heritage; two regal ballrooms showcasing 25-foot ceilings with hand-painted inlays; a breathtaking two-story Atrium room; and twenty-two distinct meeting rooms, each with exterior windows for a bright, comfortable setting.

In January of 2006 The Inn at St. John’s hotel and 5ive Steakhouse and Bar opened for business. With 118 luxury guestrooms, this distinct setting offers all the modern conveniences of a large hotel, but in an intimate setting.

With the launch of The Burger Loft in 2013, the property now offers both upscale and casual dining experiences.

St. John’s golf course began with nine holes in the property’s earliest years and grew to 18 when the golf greens opened to the public in 1979. In the 1990’s, during the property’s redevelopment, nine more were added, creating the 27-hole course that now exists on site.

Today, The Inn at St. John’s continues to offer guests impeccable service and a distinctive ambiance unsurpassed in Southeast Michigan. For meetings, conferences, weddings and a host of important occasions, the legacy of The Inn at St. John’s lives on.
