About This Job

The Vice President Tax - Research and Planning, reports directly to the Vice President Global Tax, Research and Planning.   The position is responsible for providing critical tax advice on Marriott’s business structures and transactions to ensure Marriott achieves the appropriate balance of economic business results, financial accounting, tax accounting and tax cash flows.  The incumbent will partner with business leaders, finance executives, in-house legal counsel and external providers to develop, document, communicate and monitor global tax positions.   He/she will also provide advice to internal tax department customers including Tax Compliance, Tax Accounting, and Tax Audit Teams.   The Vice President Tax - Research and Planning also assists in the identification, development, and implementation of efficient tax strategies that could impact the timing or ultimate of amount of taxes Marriott pays. 

This responsibility requires the highest quality coordination with tax leadership especially global tax provision and compliance leaders responsible for quantifying financial statement impacts of uncertain tax positions. He/She must be adept at tapping diverse sources of information, identifying opportunities, anticipating challenges, and devising and executing strategies to deliver against current and future priorities, thereby strengthening Marriott’s competitive advantage through excellence in tax strategy/management.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Act as general tax planning adviser to businesses and their principal components as assigned by the Vice President Global Tax, Research, Planning and Audits.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective execution of tax research and planning activities relating to development or investment activities, operations support, acquisitions and dispositions, and other matters for assigned businesses. Provide critical thinking to transactions to achieve efficient tax results.
  • Monitor and review of domestic and foreign legislation that may impact business operations globally and development and implement appropriate responses and strategies. Prepare and/or review written analysis, and participate in the assessment and communication of tax strategies and risks in accordance with foreign and domestic accounting and tax requirements. 
  • Identify opportunities for securing additional tax savings in connection with global operations and investments.
  • Analyze and review tax-advantaged investment proposals as requested by the SVP, Corporate Tax and/or Vice President Global Tax, Research, Planning and Audits and assist as needed in the negotiation and implementation thereof.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Experience

  • At least 7-10 years of corporate tax experience in public accounting, law firm or large corporate tax group.
  • Experience in the taxation of US companies with global operations with an emphasis on US outbound (e.g., Subpart F, GILTI, FTCs, etc), local country issues (e.g., OECD BEPS, treaty analysis, ruling processes, etc.) and transfer pricing.
  • Excellent communication skills – fosters an environment in which timely information flows smoothly through the organization
  • Able to integrate and balance priorities, and work activities for the benefit of multiple stakeholders
  • Able to develop and maintain effective relationships with a broad group of stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills and keen ability to focus on multiple complex issues and decision paths.
  • Experience analyzing and recommending appropriate strategies addressing technical complex tax issues.

Education

  • Juris Doctorate with concentration in business law and taxation
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, accounting economics or similar business experience
  • LLM in Taxation a plus
