Description

Position Summary

Responsible for the enforcement of Tribal, state and federal laws, to include criminal and traffic ordinances and codes, designed to protect the lives and property of Pueblo residents and visitors.

Supervision Exercised

Supervised by the Police Chief and Police Sergeants.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

May perform any or all of the following duties:

  1. Patrol by vehicle or on foot, Indian country or the interior of the Sandia Indian Reservation.
  2. Respond to radio dispatches, phone-in calls, informant tips, and walk-in traffic and initiates appropriate response(s).
  3. Investigate crimes reported by private parties. Bureau of Indian Affairs Law Enforcement Dispatcher, Chief of Police or other law enforcement agencies.
  4. Apprehend law violators and make arrests for offenses which occur in the presence of an officer.
  5. Serve court documents to include court summons, court subpoenas, arrest warrants, and civil papers.
  6. Attend court hearings, testify, present evidence and seek prosecution through the courts; May serve as an expert witness.
  7. Respond to and investigate traffic accidents.
  8. Direct traffic as needed.
  9. Respond to and investigate domestic violence calls within the community.
  10. Assist the Police Chief, Tribal Courts, Probationary Officer, BIA Social Service Agent, social worker or any law enforcement agent with child and elderly abuse cases.
  11. Keep detailed activity and prepare case reports.
  12. Answers questions and complaints from the public.
  13. Prepare/give classes and speeches to promote safety/awareness.
  14. Check and maintain vehicles and personal protective equipment.
  15. Attend advance training seminars and specialized training classes.
  16. Direct traffic and perform patrol activities during special tribal events.
  17. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.

  6. Ability to plan tasks and manage time efficiently.
  7. Ability to receive telephone calls and respond to emergencies.
  8. Knowledge of Tribal, state and federal laws/enforcement procedures.
  9. Knowledge of traffic ordinances and codes.
  10. Knowledge of the use of maintenance requirements for departmental and personal protective equipment.
  11. Knowledge of Tribal policies and procedures and state statutes.
  12. Knowledge of Tribal safety practices, regulations and policies.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience

Required:

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent  
  2. NM Law Enforcement Academy Certification or the U.S. Indian Police Academy Certification
  3. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License 
  4. Must be at least 21 years or age

Preferred:

  1. Prior law enforcement experience

Licensing Status

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a stringent background and character investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
  2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening.
  3. Must successfully pass all of the following additional requirements: vision requirements;  medical examination; pre-employment written exam; physical agility examination in accordance with state and federal guidelines; psychological test at appointment or within 90 days from date-of-hire; driving test; background on driving record; polygraph test.

Working Conditions

  1. Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Outside work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions.
  2. Work hours subject to rotating days and shifts with overtime work required.
  3. Subject to hazards which may cause personal bodily harm; arduous physical exertion under rigorous and unusual conditions, fumes, explosives, automotive fluids, smoke; diseases; cuts bruises, burns, common cold, influenza, dust, odors and elevated noise levels.
  4. Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard and soft carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces.
  5. Duties may involve walking, standing for long periods of time, sitting and crouching.
  6. Specific required movements include the following:
    1. Trunk- bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, carry.
    2. Arms – reach, carry, lift, twist, and rotate.
    3. Legs – lift, push, pull, twist, and rotate.
    4. Hands – Grasp, manipulate bilateral coordination, hand and eye coordination, and overall and finger dexterity.
    5. Lift up to 85% of body weight.

Additional Information

Salary Range:  $26.00 Per HourApplicants must already be authorized to work in the US and must be able to obtain and maintain a casino license in the state of New Mexico.
