The San Manuel Human Resources department provides exceptional internal and external customer support while driving Human Resources (HR) functional excellence and process improvement. Under the direction of the Director, Compensation & Benefits, the Performance & Reward Manager will lead the implementation and adoption efforts of the newly development Performance Strategy and program parameters. The successful candidate assists in the preparing and monitoring of the annual budget; gathering and administering information for audits, reviews and reports while providing operational support for the performance management, compensation and ad hoc programs. The primary goal of the performance management role is to assist the users to recognize the link between performance management, individual development and rewards while attaining enterprise strategies. This position is an individual contributor role. The ideal candidate will be highly skilled in HR; serving as an advisor and consultant to the HR and San Manuel team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides support to the managers of San Manuel’s performance Management program, including strategy and rating scale re-launch; system configuration, reward cycle planning, feedback and review, ensures that mandatory requirements such as CWA, statutory min wage increase, pay equity adjustments due to market studies, mid-year reviews, and final reviews are met, prepares employee and management notices, conducts briefings, and ensures timely performance plan actions. Ensures rating distribution is in line with accomplishment of strategic goals. Performs annual training for managers, supervisors, and employees on performance system and coaches and counsels rating and reviewing officials, etc.
  • Advises managers and supervisors on evaluation, feedback, and recognition techniques, establishment of standards, aligning employee performance plans with organization goals, performance requirements, and the overall adequacy and quality of employee performance plans.
  • Assist supervisors and managers on decisions related to employee compensation, as well as all performance management issues, to specifically include direct assistance on the automated Workday tool.
  • Coordinates and administers all facets of the Awards Program, to include program oversight, development, communications, and implementation. Works with San Manuel management and executives and other managers/supervisors in producing the annual Excellence Awards program and Incentive Awards. Provides support to the Compensation and Benefits Team in the development of an effective compensation and incentive awards process.
  • Drafts policies for performance management, pay programs, special pay tools and ad hoc projects. Ensures that San Manuel’s recognition and reward program complies with applicable laws and regulations in their design.
  • Leads the overall administration of the performance management program including the Workday automated tool enhancements/updates and the annual appeals process; and producing management status reports. Consult, develop and manage organizational metrics for HR process efficiency, effectiveness and compliance.
  • Leads strategic discussions to align performance management to rewards, organizational vitality including individual development plans and succession plans supporting planned organizational design efforts.
  • Other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to the COVID-19 public health emergency
  • Other duties as assigned to support the business needs of the department and organization.



  • Bachelor's Degree, master's preferred, in Human Resources, organizational development or mathematics.
  • 6 -8 years of specialized experience in Human Resources specializing in performance management, organizational development, statistical reporting or analytical reporting team. 
  • The ideal candidate would have strong critical thinking, research, information management and communications skills.

Examples of Specialized experience:

  • Prior experience with performance Management system, including the annual performance cycle (planning, feedback, and review).
  • Ensured that mandatory requirements such as employee performance plan issuance, mid-year reviews, and final reviews are met.
  • Prepared employee and management notices, conducted briefings, and ensured timely performance plan actions.
  • Provided support in the development of an effective compensation and incentive awards process.
  • Ensure compensation program complies with applicable laws and regulations in their design.
  • Assisted supervisors and managers on decisions related to employee compensation, as well as all performance management issues, identify individual development plans for employees; to specifically include direct assistance on the automated tools to support performance management, development and compensation.
  • Provides guidance on performance management, employee development and compensation-related matters.


  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) preferred.

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
