Hyatt seeks a motivated and prolific engineer who is passionate about data to help us build out the next generation of data engineering applications and products. The Director, Data Engineering is responsible for enabling and empowering our partners by democratizing access to guest interaction, operational and market data and fostering algorithmic decision making across the company.

In this role you’ll build business-critical, scalable and robust data and machine-learning solutions, and intuitive and trustworthy data products that power data discovery, self-serve analytics, operational innovation and drive product innovation. This position is not just a management position, you will be expected to code, manage people, and architect for the future of data at Hyatt as well as the department structure. You will have the opportunity to build and grow a team of exceptional software engineers and technical leaders.

You will be part of a global data community and you will work in cross-functional and agile project teams alongside Data Product Managers, Data Stewards, Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, other Data Engineers, and executives to improve the experience of guests and colleagues worldwide.

The Role

  • Build and manage a high performing data engineering team whose core work will be to:
    • Design and build data pipelines to support data analytics and science projects following software engineering best practices
    • Use state of the art technologies to acquire, ingest and transform big datasets
    • Map data fields to hypothesis, curate, wrangle and prepare data to be used in advanced analytics models
    • Create and manage data environments in the cloud or on premise
    • Develop and support operational reporting and self-service data engineering work and our business intelligence suite
    • Build prototypes, optimize and deliver data for core portfolio of KPIs
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to increase speed, reliability and quality of data structures; anticipate technical obstacles; drive adoption of solutions
  • Influence key decisions on architecture and lead team to implement scalable, reliable and cost-effective engineering solutions
  • Define processes to achieve operations excellence and system reliability
  • Accountable for overall integrity, completeness and accuracy of data within domain and as such defines SLAs; implements systems to detect bugs and monitor quality; improves discoverability of data; tests and root causes data quality issues and facilitates remediation
  • Work across business to ensure master integration and meta data requirements are met as part of team’s work
  • Leads changes and revisions to master data, metadata and data hierarchies; 
    • Identify risk areas and enhancement opportunities to Hyatt Governance model and ensure information security standards are maintained at all times
  • Create and cultivate strategic relationships with Hyatt's Chief Security Office, Chief Privacy Office and Hyatt's ExComm

  • Experience in building and mentoring a strong team of data, machine learning and/or software engineers 
  • Significant experience working on large scale data warehouses (DW)/ operational data stores (ODS). 
  • Experience in building, optimizing, and maintaining data pipelines and data architecture in Cloud based environments like Amazon Web Service and Snowflake. 
  • Good experience of working with globally distributed teams in a collaborative and productive manner. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across variety of stakeholders, ability to negotiate with and influence others.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and planning skills.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit; drives change and innovation.
  • Designing and developing data API's for reusability.
  • Experience working in a data warehouse environment with diverse data sources and visualization tools like Tableau, and ThoughtSpot. 
  • Confident in managing and executing projects cross-functionally with various stakeholders from start to finish including the ability to evaluate opportunities and manage tradeoffs and align workflows and performance dependencies across multiple workstreams/teams.
  • Have a bachelors or Masters in Computer Science or related field with at least 5 years of experience in a highly technical data organization.
