About This Job

The VP Infrastructure Platform Engineering is responsible for developing and executing the cloud, DevOps, and platform strategies for Marriott International.  Brokers vendor relationships with key public cloud providers as well as drive the centralized integration of data and security with said providers across all deployed workloads.  Oversees the strategy, deployment and lifecycle of infrastructure platforms, including the automation of infrastructure deployment.  The VP Infrastructure Platform Engineering will also be accountable to work with Marriott disciplines on cloud migration and platform planning with a goal of providing efficiency, flexibility and speed at the lowest aggregate cost, while maximizing the investments in hosting services.  Finally, this leader will drive innovation and adoption of new technologies as they evolve over time in the cloud services space, ensuring that services are offered in a centralized fashion to enable maximum efficiency and adoption at the best value.

The VP Infrastructure Platform Engineering is responsible for defining a tools and automation strategy to maximize organizational speed and flexibility while mitigating risk.  This position will be accountable for developing automation solutions across the portfolio to drive self service, repeatability, and scale according to architectural principles.  Key successes will include a unified strategy and tactical rationalization of the tools and monitoring portfolio, as well as training and utilization for the portfolio of tools that remain as evidenced by accelerated change velocity, reduced incidents, and rapid remediation of issues.  Working across all business technology disciplines, this leader will ensure that requirements (both business and technical) and use cases are collected and understood and tool and automation decisions meet these requirements in the most efficient and economical way possible.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Administration or related technical field.
  • 12+ years of Information Technology senior leadership experience with at least 5 years at a VP or Sr. Director level role preferably at a Fortune 500 company with over $20B in revenue. 
  • Candidate must have had at least 5 years in a hands on technical engineering or development role.  While this role is an executive leadership position – company requires candidates with previous hands on distributed infrastructure engineering experience with experience in advanced engineering solutions experience (server, storage, automation, etc.). 
  • Direct management of cross functional, sourced, or matrixed teams specially working with outsourced suppliers.
  • 3+ years working with public cloud services providers specifically AWS and Azure – specifically in the consumption of platform services.
  • Must have at least 5+ years of working on global projects and with globally distributed teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with a wide range of open source tools and distribution engines.
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale initiatives/transformations.
  • Deep understanding of infrastructure automation, instrumentation and fulfillment technologies.
  • ITIL v3 Enterprise experience.
  • Strong negotiating, influencing and problem resolution skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Knowledge of business environment, service requirements and hospitality culture.
  • Experience developing complex global distributed software solutions residing within multiple country borders. 
  • Demonstrated ability to assess customer/client needs, creatively approach solutions, decide and influence appropriate courses of action.
  • Deep understanding of IT financial structures and ability to manage to corporate financial practices and goals, including drivers of process cost.
  • Experience leading large, disbursed global technology organizations
  • Comprehension and understanding of product model and agile principles adaptation into an Infrastructure organization
  • Graduate/post graduate degree.

CORE WORK ACTIVITIES

Leadership

  • Accountable for providing day-to-day leadership and management of the Cloud Platform Engineering services organization and managing the effective delivery of those services to the company.
  • Establishes management level relationships and partnering with all discipline teams to define systems engineering and cloud services.
  • Accountable for managing suppliers in ensuring they deliver quality services and meet all contractual obligations.
  • Fosters an environment of continuous improvement and structured processes and procedures that support not only a zero-fault culture, but one that focuses on the "how" as much as the what.

Strategy & Planning

  • Develops overall strategy, vision, and goals for Cloud Platform Engineering group by identifying solutions and associated planning to ensure alignment with discipline and enterprise architecture goals.
  • Will also be accountable to work with Marriott application owners on cloud migration planning with a goal of providing efficiency, flexibility and speed at the lowest aggregate cost, while maximizing the investments in hosting services previously made by Marriott. 
  • Establishes a flexible service delivery model with defined, documented, and communicated service levels and works with the Finance team to develop transparent pricing models that are flexible enough to meet ongoing business requirements.
  • Monitors division/unit usage/demand of services provided by either the internal organization or outsources partners to ensure that shared services actual expenditures are in line with planned spending.
  • Provides management direction and assistance in performing periodic audits to ensure compliance with all service delivery and technical services identified in the Master Services Agreement.
  • Tracks actual utilization of services and reporting of supplier performance in meeting business service expectations and service levels.
  • Accountable for ensuring usage/demand of organizational services actual versus planned expenditures are monitored.
  • Accountable for ensuring projected resource baselines are managed, forecasted and reconciled against actual utilization of services.

Technology Management

  • Defines requirements, strategy, solutions, and standards for the organization to meet business needs and adhere with enterprise architecture and security standards.
  • Responsible for setting infrastructure technology standards in the area of server, storage, automation, virtualization and cloud hosting services.
  • Drives the evolution of partner relationships with all cloud services providers – ensures that cloud technology roadmaps align with the market.
  • Sets automation standards and methods across the entire infrastructure stack – ensures that productivity achieved from the automation of services results in decreased costs and expenses related to ITO services.
  • Technology thought leader whom understands how to build technology infrastructure solutions for digital and globally distributed platforms.
  • Experience deploying such technologies as VX-Rack, vmware, EMC storage, Cisco networking and servers, Chef, Puppet, HP Servers and Storage, opensource solutions and support.
  • Experience integrating service catalogs and solutions with ServiceNOW.
  • Experience with security tools and concepts – ensures perpetual compliance with all security guidelines and policies.

Supports the IT Organization

  • Participate in the creation and maintenance of IT’s business strategy and planning.
  • Support and follows defined IT Governance decision rights, standards and practices.
  • Emphasize accuracy and effectiveness of estimating and planning management with team.
  • Assist all team with the preparation and monitoring IT budgets.
