Job Summary

The Senior Network Engineer, Cloud & Datacenter is responsible for designing optimal LAN and WAN networks comprising of routers, switches, firewalls, and load-balancers. This includes networks in data centers, corporate offices, and third-party co-location PoP sites all which host applications and interconnect hotel properties, users, systems, partners, vendors, and public/private cloud networks. This position has a heavy emphasis on managing firewalls including segmentation, DMZs, remote access, and overall policy/rules management.

Reporting to the Sr Dir, Cloud & Datacenter Networks and part of a high performing team of network technologists, the Senior Network Engineer manages and realizes key ITIL stages for the network including design, transition/implementation, operations, and service improvement. The engineer engages in technical workgroups and cross functional teams that include both internal teams and external vendors, partners, and customers to meet current and future user requirements as well as to resolve and make decisions on complex and high-risk issues.

Candidate Profile

Education And Experience

Required

:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field experience/certification
  • 7+ years’ experience as a Network Engineer with 5 or more years in a hands-on role that implements engineering standards, documents engineering designs, and participates in project cutovers
  • 5 years’ experience in an IT infrastructure lead role that includes:
    • Subject matter expertise in network security design for firewalls (Check Point and Palo Alto) and intrusion detection/prevention systems including implementation of secure and reliable network DMZs and segmentation zones in datacenter and cloud networks supporting mission-critical, customer-facing applications and services
    • Technical knowledge on common routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP), IPv4/6, TCP, VPN, etc. across a global distributed wide area router (Cisco, Juniper, etc.), software defined (SDWAN) networks; managing availability and diversity across telco and ISP infrastructure
    • Technical knowledge in datacenter switch fabric platforms (Cisco, Arista, or equivalent) including legacy core, distribution, access spanning-tree-based topologies as well as spine and leaf architectures
    • Technical knowledge in load-balancers including F5 LTMs/GTMs and WAN optimizers
    • Network tools and applications management such as DNS, NTP, network surveillance tools (e.g. SolarWinds, Netcool, Big Panda), and performance management tools
  • Demonstrated experience in technical writing delivering written documents detailing network solutions and diagrams
  • Ability to work non-standard hours during change implementations

Additional Skills And Attributes Desired

  • Advanced Degree in Computer Science or other technical discipline or MBA, preferably with a focus on technology
  • 10+ years’ experience managing large, globally distributed network architecture, engineering, and/or operations teams and leveraging next-generation network designs and technologies to support large-scale deployments
  • Experience in zero-trust and SASE security model network implementation
  • Experience in setting up connectivity to and virtual private clouds in public cloud infrastructure such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Alibaba Cloud, Oracle Cloud, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Proven track record of driving transformation in network technologies, tools, and processes through a data-driven continuous improvement methodology
  • Strong technical knowledge of network automation schemes including in areas of Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and Python
  • Proven experience leading highly effective technical teams through major technology and organizational change 
  • Certification in network and/or security technologies (e.g., CCIE, CCNP, CISSP, etc.)
  • Strong influencing skills and an ability to overcome barriers while driving change through collaboration
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for a wide range of audiences including executives, business stakeholders, and IT teams
  • Strong attention to detail with an ability to operate effectively across multiple priorities

Core Work Activities

Technical Leadership
  • Contributes input to help manage project schedules, risks, and costs.
  • Trains and/or mentors other team members, and peers as appropriate
  • Provides financial input on department or project budgets, capital expenditures or other cost/resource estimates as requested
  • Establish cross team relationships and partnering with all Business disciplines and other MI teams to define Datacenter Network services, meet service level requirements, and serve as an escalation point to resolve service delivery and operational issues. 
  • Identifies opportunities to enhance the service delivery processes.

Technology Management

  • Define requirements, strategy, solutions, and standards for Cloud and Datacenter Network infrastructure to meet business needs and adhere with enterprise architecture & security standards
  • Manage Cloud and Datacenter Network products and solutions, including the design, low level engineering, and delivery of new hardware systems for Marriott applications across the cloud and datacenter network
  • Approve and oversee projects to implement and maintain services while meeting deadlines.
  • Partner on all aspects of the technology lifecycle including requirements, product and services management, planning, procurement, installation, support, and retirement in conjunction with other Infrastructure VPs, Enterprise Architecture, and the business planning teams
  • Ensure participation of appropriate technical expertise in technical requirements gathering and solution design phases of assigned projects
  • Manage vendors to meet obligations for engineering design, network implementation, and technical support service delivery and service restoration
  • Continuously improve operations processes, develop, and present best practices, technical concepts and technologies for innovative Cloud and Datacenter Network solutions

It Governance

  • Follows all defined standards and processes (i.e. IT Governance, SM&G, Architecture, etc.), and provides input for improvements to the appropriate process owners as needed
  • Maintains a proper balance between business and operational risk
  • Follows the defined project management and/or standards and processes
