POSITION SUMMARY

As a senior member of the Global Design US & Canada leadership team, the VP Design & Project Management will play a key role achieving company and department objectives around growth, design excellence, process excellence and associate engagement.  This individual will lead a studio of architects, designers and other professionals in the collaborative process with owners, consultants and internal/external stakeholders for the successful execution of the architecture, interior design and delivery of Marriott Select branded hotel projects throughout the US and Canada.

In addition, the VP will lead or participate in cross-studio and cross-departmental initiatives on behalf of Global Design or the company. The VP will interface and collaborate with key internal stakeholders (e.g., Development, Brand, Operations and Owner & Franchise Services) and owners and franchisees and will need to maintain open and trusted lines of communication as well as skillfully balance the needs of all stakeholders. The VP will also serve as an ambassador for Global Design in the broader hospitality design community, participating in industry events and forums.

This individual will be a well-rounded professional who excels in team leadership, communication and cultivating professional relationships, embraces continual improvement and has balanced expertise across the innovative, technical, and business sides of design.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Provide leadership to studio teams responsible for the oversight and execution of architecture and interior design projects, delivering appropriate and innovative design solutions that meet project budgets, schedules, and brand standards.
  • Cultivate strong, trusting relationships with owners, consultants, and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Lead the design approval process (DAP) to ensure all projects are reviewed and meet standards.
  • Manage pre-development project reviews and communications.
  • Review contracts, schedules and program management plans for design and construction implications to Marriott business interests; manage responses and resolve issues.
  • Provide consistent and accurate project progress summary reports.
  • Identify risks and implement action plans to mitigate exposure and protect business interests and relationships.
  • Critically assess studio organization and performance and ensure effective structures, processes, jobs, and tools are in place for associates to do their jobs effectively; partner with leadership and HR to implement strategic changes.
  • Actively support and seek out technology solutions for continual process improvement.  
  • Manage studio resources within established project and department budgets. Provide strategic budgeting input.
  • Set goals and expectations for direct reports; hold staff accountable for successful performance; assess performance.
  • Mentor team members and identify professional development opportunities.
  • Lead or contribute to various cross-studio and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Represent Global Design US & Canada at various internal and external events.
  • Champion excellence in business ethics, social responsibility, cross-cultural effectiveness, and associate engagement.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Key Skills/Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in architecture, interior design, project management and/or construction management.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a management role; demonstrated success leading teams and developing others in a complex, service-intensive, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong leader of people with ability to create a compelling vision, positive team culture and motivate others to achieve optimal results; ability to work in a matrix organization and leverage shared resources to achieve results.
  • In-depth understanding of hospitality business model, management/franchise contracts, and technical services agreements.
  • In-depth knowledge of lodging development, design and construction and ability to take a leadership role in the development of site planning, due diligence, estimating, design execution and construction management.
  • Operates with an open, collaborative approach to foster strong relationships and ensure key stakeholders’ priorities are considered and balanced.
  • Ability to sell ideas persuasively; settles differences and wins concessions without damaging relationships; can be both direct and forceful while remaining diplomatic.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills; ability to take large volumes of complex information and present it in a clear, concise, actionable manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate creative solutions for complex business issues, mitigating risk and maximizing stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Results-oriented; delivers results under difficult conditions and demonstrates balanced judgment under pressure. Ability to assess, plan and prioritize to meet budgets, schedules, and high-quality standards.
  • Ability to consistently make decisions in a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete information and under tight deadlines and pressure.
  • Comfortable challenging organizational norms and accepted thinking to improve effectiveness.
  • Desire to be a leader as well as a partner.

Education And Professional Certification

  • Baccalaureate degree in relevant field required (architecture, interior design, construction/project management).
  • Licensure as Architect or Interior Designer preferred.
