Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, Transitional Care, the Nutritionist completes nutritional needs assessments while providing nutritional education and dietetic consultation services with the goal of improving overall nutritional health of the Tribal Community. This position implements, coordinates, promotes and evaluates the dietary and nutrition plan of any tribal member discharged from the hospital with new dietary restrictions as well as provides education and guidance for Tribal Citizens who have specific dietary needs, food sensitivities allergies. This position delivers nutrition information, instruction, and counseling to Tribal Citizens and their dependents and Tribal culinarians who prepare meals for citizens. The Nutritionist serves the entirety of the Tribal Community with a focus towards improving nutritional outcomes in respect to maternal, child, and adolescent health in addition to the nutritional outcomes for seniors or those with chronic diseases. The Nutritionist champions the nutritional initiatives of the Tribal Community while aligning themselves with the goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that reflects and upholds the Tribe’s vision, mission, and values.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities1. Implements, coordinates, promotes and evaluates nutritional program guidelines, inclusive of meal preparation and necessary education, for Tribal Citizens.2. Educates and counsels people of various age groups to select, prepare, and use the foods that will best nourish their bodies while taking into consideration physical, financial, social, and emotional needs as well as personal preferences and cultural patterns.3. Performs nutritional assessments on Tribal Citizens and dependents while utilizing various published standards to determine whether individuals are at nutritional risk.4. Gives direct nutritional and dietetic consultation to individuals with special nutritional needs; plans and review menus for nutrition sites where meals are prepared and served for Tribal Citizens.

5. Develops and implements basic programs of instruction in diet therapy, nutrition and diet counseling techniques for Tribal Citizens and their dependents; develops accompanying nutritional education materials.

6. Oversees and participates in the preparation of required records, reports, and evaluation on nutrition component activities for specific departments programs.7. Conducts studies to determine the nature and extent of nutritional needs and challenges of the Tribal Community.  Evaluates the effects of nutritional and dietetic services offered to Tribal Citizens and their dependents.8. Provides technical training and guidance for team members assigned to the nutrition component of any service or tribal activity.9. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.10. Assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to public health emergencies.



  • Bachelors Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Health Science, or a closely related field required.
  • Masters Degree in related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in nutritional education and individual counseling services within a community or public health setting preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirements indicated above.
  • Must possess knowledge of the chemical and physiological processes and functions of specific nutrients in regards to meeting peoples specific nutritional needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of food selection, purchasing, preparation, processing, and meal planning in relation to appeal, cost, nutritive value, and quality.
  • Must be familiar with of a variety of dietary patterns and the particular food requirements of maternal, geriatric, economically disadvantaged, physically handicapped, and other special nutritional needs groups.
  • Must possess thorough understanding of health-education methods as they apply to the field of nutrition as well as typical community sources of nutritional data and aid.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with health professionals, community health organizations, co-workers, nutrition program participants, and other groups and individuals encountered in the course of the job.
  • Must be able to write clear, concise reports and correspondence and maintain complete records.


  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the companys insurance carrier.
  • Must possess a current Registered Dietitian certification as issued by the Commission on Dietetic Registration or be Registered Dietitian eligible at time of hire and pass the registration exam conducted by the Registration Commission of the American Dietetic Association within six months of hire date.
