Job Summary:

The Senior Communications Specialist supports the marketing needs of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community's (SMSC) Tribal Operations enterprises and internal departments. This position reports to the Communications Manager and is responsible for creating, editing, and fact-checking content for a wide variety of enterprises and departments. The position is responsible for providing guidance to the Communications team and the rest of the Marketing Department, acting as principal editor and proofreader for all copy produced to ensure accuracy, quality, and on-brand messaging. The Senior Communications Specialist also assists the Communications Manager in identifying communications needs for high-priority projects, enforcing style standards, and defining the team's big-picture communication strategies, processes, and plans. This position requires the ability and desire to track and explore industry trends, work directly with clients as needed, and manage multiple, complex, high-priority projects simultaneously, while independently managing competing and shifting timelines and priorities to ensure that deadlines are met. Along with the Communications Manager, this position plays an integral role in the SMSC's crisis communications strategy, serving as an on-call writer and editor for emergency messaging needs as they arise.

Job Duties:

  1. Review, edit, fact-check, and provide copy direction for all marketing materials to ensure accuracy, correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, department style standards, and key messaging alignment. Provide feedback and guidance to Communications Specialists and department regarding edits and messaging.
  2. Draft content for communications required for the SMSC's various enterprises and internal departments, acting as point person for particularly high-priority, quick-turn, and/or otherwise challenging assignments.
  3. Assist the Communications Manager in identifying and driving communication strategies, process improvements, and key messaging for the entire department. Conduct market research to build organization knowledge and stay current with industry trends. Acts as a stand-in for the Communications Manager as needed, attending meetings and working directly with clients on project needs and approvals.
  4. Lead the communications team's presence and strategic messaging at SMSC events, tradeshows, and tours, coaching others on interactions with the public and acting as an ambassador for the SMSC.
  5. Draft and distribute crisis communications and other public/media relations materials as needed. Act as an on-call representative for off-hour communications needs.
  6. Other duties as assigned, to include: Business Council and Tribal Administration requests, on-camera interviews with subject matter experts, and more.
  7. Assist in support of SMSC enterprise-wide events


Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, journalism, communications, or related field required.
  • Five or more years of work experience in marketing, communications, journalism, writing, editing, or related field required.
  • Experience working with a design team on content layout for a wide variety of published materials.
  • Crisis communications experience required.
  • Strong familiarity with AP style highly desired.
  • Supervisory experience desired.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a keen ability to determine and develop content needs for a variety of diverse enterprises.
