Under the direction of the Director of Public Health & Medical Officer, the Infection Control Nurse is an integral member responsible for providing the overall oversight and strategic direction for all infection control and prevention advice, support, and expertise for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians (the Tribe) and its enterprise. The Infection Control Nurse acts as an adviser to minimize the spread of infection and the implementation of policy and procedures, as recommended by state and federal guidelines. The Infection Control Nurse maintains a comprehensive, efficient and effective infection prevention and control service by collaborating with various departments to advocate for clinical health services for Tribal Citizens, guests, and team members. The incumbent selected for this role participates in hygiene audits and provides feedback in the development and implementation of infectious disease prevention plans where necessary. The Infection Control Nurse champions the strategic initiatives of the Tribe in a manner that faithfully reflects and upholds the Tribal Community’s vision, mission, and values.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Responsible for providing the overall oversight and strategic plan for infection control and prevention support, in addition to promoting the mission, vision, and values of the Tribe by establishing standard methods of care, utilizing evidence based practice and best practice standards to promote best practice standards to Tribal Citizens and team members regarding infectious disease, control and prevention.

2. Gathers and analyzes data to make evidence-based decisions.  Creates, implements, and maintains comprehensive Infection Control strategic action plans including prevention, response, emergency/contingency response situations. Responsible for monitoring, investigating, surveilling, and preventing/ controlling disease. Investigates outbreaks of infection with reference to their source and mode of disease spread, in addition to reporting outbreaks to relevant departments. Advises on isolation techniques and supporting front-line managers in supervising the implementation of such techniques in specific situations.

3. Maintains clinical competence and participates in the infection prevention and control education program for all Tribal Citizens, team members, and guests annually by keeping abreast with nursing literature, recent nursing research and new developments in nursing management education and practices. This includes classes in infection prevention, infection control, and overall Tribal, team member, and guests health practices. Responsible for organizing Infection Prevention and Control team meetings to maintain trainings current.

4. Supports the administration, development and implementation of health initiatives and programs by regularly evaluating prevention/control of infectious measures in specific situations to ensure that Tribal Citizens, team members, and guests provide advice on continuous improvement, procedures and control mechanisms relating to quality, compliance, and infectious diseases. Updates health databases to ensure that records are accurately maintained.

5. Responsible for establishing and implementing infection control training for team members for all health orientation programs, in collaboration with department leaders across the Enterprise. Creates policies and procedures within the Enterprise related to infection control and team member/guests health.

6. Provides consultation and education to team members, guests, physicians and Tribal Community members in respect to Infectious Prevention protocols to facilitate emergency preparedness. Coordinates with the Infection Prevention and Control team to determine the direction of surveillance activities and actively evaluates effectiveness of the Infection Prevention and Control Plan quarterly, or as needed.

7. Conducts annual risk assessments with consideration of Tribal Citizens, team members, and guests to provide relevant data, in addition to new and emerging infectious diseases. Notifies the County and/or State Health Department of any reportable diseases, adhering to all internal county and state procedures.

8. Responsible for coordinating the infection control program by using epidemiological principles and statistical methods to design, implement and evaluate infection prevention/control strategies. Collects relevant epidemiological data to assist the infection control team in preventing spread.

9. Ensures that compliance policies and procedures meet state and federal requirements. 

10. Assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to public health emergencies.

Requirements

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • Nursing License (RN); Bachelors Degree (BSN) required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in healthcare required, at least two of which should be in an infection control role.
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirements indicated above. CIC certification from Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. is highly desirable.
  • Strong motivational and collaboration emphasis; communicates change effectively, overcomes resistance and builds commitment.
  • Ability to multi-task, lead and prioritize effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Must maintain a strict level of confidentiality and act in a manner consistent with all legal and regulatory requirements and in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. 
  • Must be personable and professional, capable of using caution and discretion in communication.
  • Must have strong computer and research skills to ensure they keep abreast of best practices and standards of care within the field of healthcare.
  • Detail oriented and capable of exploring innovative solutions to solve complex problems and address issues through the use of a combination of delivered and custom-developed tools.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the companys insurance carrier.
