Position Summary: The staff veterinarian will provide quality medical care for all our sanctuary animals, employee animals, and some public animals (i.e., other rescue groups' animals and low-income family pets).

Responsibilities:

  • Treat people around you as our most valuable resource by leading with Kindness and Compassion in all your actions, build trust by demonstrating authenticity and following through on your commitments, encourage self-care and work-life balance through your own example, and work to build strong relationships with your team by creating communication loops to share and receive honest feedback. You are responsible and accountable for the culture of your team.
  • Responsible for the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of sanctuary animals, employee animals, and some public animals.
  • Performing surgeries as required. These include, but are not limited to, mid to high volume spay and neuter, abdominal exploratories, mass removals, and can include orthopedic surgeries as well.
  • Diagnostic procedures include, but are not limited to, interpreting radiographs, ultrasounds, fine-needle aspirates, nasal and tracheal flushes.
  • Be on-call after hours 2-3 days a week for sanctuary and employee animals.
  • Advocate for animals, educate the public and the Best Friends Animal Society staff on all aspects of animal health and ensure a safe and effective clinic environment.
  • Educate, mentor, and coach veterinary students.
  • Promote continuing development of medical care through continued education.
  • Delegate duties and responsibilities to technical support staff to ensure proper care and comfort of hospitalized patients.
  • Keep abreast of veterinary concerns and trends in the animal welfare movement.
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD) or equivalent required.
  • 4+ years of work experience in a clinic, hospital, or shelter setting
  • Experience with large animals is not required but is helpful.
  • Interest in other species such as parrots, rabbits, and wildlife is also helpful.
  • Proficient at spays and neuters of dogs and cats
  • License in good standing with state veterinary board
  • License or application for a license with Drug Enforcement Agency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, upbeat, energetic, takes initiative, uses tact and diplomacy.
  • Able to maintain clear communication with internal staff on all levels. Proven written and oral presentation skills
  • Interest in continuing veterinary education and exploration of new technologies and treatment modalities.
  • Flexible work schedule with emergency on-call duties as needed.
  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends positions on issues
  • Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated good working habits in an environment that requires multitasking and multiple demands on time.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with access to transportation

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work long hours multiple days in a row.
  • Bending, stooping, walking and lifting animals of all sizes daily.
  • Working at a computer for extended periods with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.
