Under the direction of the San Manuel Utility Authority Principal Engineer, the High Voltage Systems Specialist is a journey level expert with advanced experience, who will hold the primary responsibility of ensuring the substation and switchgear are available, reliable, and maintained per ANSINETA standards while serving as a subject matter expert across the enterprise. The High Voltage System Specialist also provides on-site, after-hours on-call outage response. In the event of an outage, incumbent must be able to be on-site within thirty (30) minutes of initial contact.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1.    Designs and delivers inspections (bushings, switches, transformers), transformer fan maintenance, battery and UPS testing, circuit breaker testing, cable testing (as needed); potential and current transformer testing; relay testing, metering and instrumentation; SCADA system telemetry monitoring and troubleshooting, power quality/disturbance and transient monitoring; component cleaning and lubrication, insulator washing, weed control and pest abatement; lighting system verification; oil leakage, ground system testing, fire and safety system overview and security and CCTV system check. 

2.    Develops maintenance procedures, schedules and best practices while leading all predictive maintenance utilizing infrared surveys, ultrasonics, discharge testing, transformer testing and oil analysis; power quality/harmonics analysis coordination and support; and reactive power correction. 

3.    Implements and manages appropriate substation and switchgear maintenance planning and budgeting, and outage prevention-planning. Escalates identified maintenance and safety issues and recommends equipment maintenance improvements when applicable.

    4.    Executes expert level, rapid outage response which may include remote and onsite troubleshooting, fault and root cause analysis, repair services, and service restoration with minimal inconvenience to business operations and tribal patrons.

5.    Constructs and executes analytical reporting, record keeping and documentation in correlation with inspections, testing, monitoring, troubleshooting and safety for entire substation while also ensuring inventory of high-voltage tools, equipment and parts.

6.    Leads vendor relationships by ensuring appropriate alignment and deliverables while communicating any issues and identifying necessary process changes or project needs. 

7.    Develops procedures and processes, including safety procedures and safety training in compliance with OSHA, National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and local and legislation code.

8.    Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.    

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field is required and formal Electrical Training Certification or diploma through an Electrical Apprenticeship, trade school, university, community college, or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, construction management or another related field is preferred. 
  • A minimum 10 years of experience as a journey level Electric Substation Operator, or a journey level Electrical Line Mechanic required.  
  • Working knowledge and experience with the complex principles and practices of an Electric Utility Substation is required.
  • Must understand and be able to utilize the theories, methods, and procedures in the installation, maintenance, testing, and calibration of electric metering and testing instruments and equipment.
  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.
