Definition:

A kitchen mechanic, also known as a kitchen equipment technician or kitchen appliance repair technician, is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing various kitchen equipment and appliances in commercial kitchens. They ensure that all kitchen equipment is functioning properly, minimizing downtime, and ensuring smooth operation in the kitchen.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install and set up new kitchen equipment, including ovens, stoves, grills, fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and other appliances.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot kitchen equipment to identify issues, malfunctions, or potential problems.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting equipment to ensure optimal performance and extend its lifespan.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems in kitchen equipment, following manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Test and calibrate equipment to ensure accurate temperature, pressure, and other operational parameters.
  • Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, services performed, and equipment condition.
  • Collaborate with kitchen staff and management to understand their equipment needs and provide recommendations for upgrades or replacements.
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and regulations related to kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working with electrical, gas, and other potentially hazardous systems.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring that tools, equipment, and spare parts are properly stored and maintained.

Required Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a kitchen mechanic or similar role, preferably in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Strong knowledge of kitchen equipment, including ovens, stoves, grills, fryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, and other appliances.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues in kitchen equipment.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and regulations related to kitchen equipment and appliances.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, managing time and priorities effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Good communication skills to interact with kitchen staff, management, and equipment suppliers.
  • Physical stamina and dexterity to handle heavy equipment and perform tasks that may require bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.

  • Report work related accidents, or other injuries immediately upon occurrence to manager/supervisor.
  • Report maintenance needs, accidents, injuries and unsafe work conditions to manager.
  • Requires problem solving abilities.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and environmentally responsible work environment.
  • Must be able to interact with co-workers and have a sense of TEAM.
