Founded in 1912, Lakewood Country Club is a premier private club serving more than 1,150 member families. The campus includes a 68,000 sq. ft. main clubhouse, fitness center, multiple dining outlets, an 8,000 sq. ft. pool/tennis clubhouse, three swimming pools, and eight hard-tru tennis courts. The Club maintains a multi-year waiting list across Membership categories and is proud of the close-knit, multi-generational community it has built since 1912.
Position Summary
Lakewood Country Club is seeking a relationship-driven Director of Membership & Communication to lead the Membership Department and shape the voice of the Club across every Member touchpoint; from the newsletter and website to social media and print. This role manages the full Membership lifecycle, from prospective Member inquiry through orientation and ongoing engagement, while directing the Club's editorial style, brand identity, and digital presence. This position reports to the General Manager.
What Success Looks Like
- Prospective Members move smoothly through inquiry, application, and orientation.
- Membership records, waiting lists, and reporting are accurate and current.
- The newsletter, website, and Member communications are consistent, on-brand, and delivered on schedule.
- The Club's graphics standards and editorial style are applied consistently across every channel.
- Develop social media accounts to display club activities and special event announcements.
Key Responsibilities
Membership Administration
- Process all requests for transfers of Membership and maintain all Member waiting and status lists.
- Maintain the Club's database of Member files and ensure application procedures are consistently followed.
- Assist prospective Members in fulfilling application requirements; conduct tours and new Member orientation.
- Process Member resignations and develop retention reports.
- Recommend Membership classification changes to help ensure the Club meets the needs of evolving markets.
- Support the transfer of Club equity Memberships, liaising with sales agents, attorneys, and title companies.
Member & Community Relations
- Personally engage each Member to instill confidence that the Club is operated in the Membership's best interest.
- Serve on applicable Club committees to ensure Members' interests are consistently represented.
- Respond to Member feedback in accordance with Club standards and use it to continuously improve service.
- Survey peer clubs to inform and refine Membership policy.
- Keep Members informed of changes to Club rules, regulations, and policies.
- Be present during Club operating hours and special events to welcome Members and guests.
Communications & Content
- Write, edit, and proof all Club advertising, newsletter articles, and press releases; own design and layout.
- Maintain the Club's editorial style standards and apply them when editing copy submitted by staff.
- Develop print materials for new and prospective Member promotions, menus, and in-house signage.
- Photograph Member events for use in Club publications and exhibits.
- Maintain and enforce the Club's graphics standards, logo, and visual identity.
- Use social media to communicate with and promote special events to Members.
- Coordinate with the Food & Beverage department on major food promotions and dining productions.
Digital & Web
- Maintain and promote the Club's website, mobile app, and social media accounts for both Members and staff.
- Own the accuracy of the calendar of events, email blasts, and push notifications to Members.
- Partner with department heads to identify and meet marketing and web needs.
Administration
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all Member information.
- Attend weekly function meetings and monthly supervisors' meetings.
- Complete other assignments as directed by the General Manager.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Hospitality/Resort Management, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Five years of relevant work experience, including three years in the hospitality industry.
- Website content management experience required. Social Media experience.
Core Competencies
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, Members, guests, and the general public.
- Strong news-style writing, feature writing, copywriting, proofreading, and editing skills. Magazine or Newsletter experience beneficial.
- Proficiency with computer graphics software, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Comfortable directing and overseeing the activities of a Membership department.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform required duties during emergency situations.
