The Hamlet of Pangnirtung is located on the southeast shore of Pangnirtung Fjord, on the south shore of Baffin Island’s Cumberland Sound, 297 km northeast of Iqaluit. The community is also known as Pangniqtuuq in Inuktitut, which means “the place of many bull caribou.”
The hamlet has a population of 1,481 residents (per 2016 Statistics Canada census) and the language spoken are Inuktitut and English. Pangnirtung is a remote fly-in community with no access to the rest of Nunavut. It is accessible only through Pangnirtung Airport, which has daily flights from Pangnirtung to Iqaluit and Qikiqtarjuaq.
