About this Employer

The Seminoles of Florida are descendants of just 300 Indians who managed to elude capture by the U.S. army in the 19th century. Over 2,000 of our Seminole members live on six reservations in the state of Florida, located in Hollywood, Big Cypress, Brighton, Immokalee, Ft. Pierce, and Tampa.

Today, our members of the Seminole tribe speak one or both of two languages: Maskókî and Mikisúkî. These are the only two left from among the dozens of dialects that were spoken by their ancestors here in the Southeast. In 1957, many of the Native Americans in Florida formed a political organization called the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Our Seminole members work hard to be economically independent with different industries. Tourism and bingo profits pay for infrastructure and schools on their reservations, while citrus groves and cattle have replaced early 20th-century trade in animal hides and crafts as the tribe’s primary revenue sources.

While becoming more economically diverse, we maintain respect for the old ways. Some of our membesstill live in open, palm-thatched dwellings called chickees, wear clothing that is an evolution of traditional styles, and some celebrate the passing of the seasons just as our ancestors did more than two centuries ago.

We also visit schools and festivals across the state, performing traditional dance and music to share their history with non-Indians.

As established in the Seminole Tribe of Florida's constitution, the Tribal Council is the chief governing body, composed of a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman and Council Representatives from each reservation. Today, the Council administers the Seminole Police Department, the Human Resources programs, the Tribal gaming enterprises, citrus groves, the Billie Swamp Safari, the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum and the majority of the Tribe's cigarette-related enterprises. The Seminole Tribe of Florida's Legal Services Department administers a public defender's office, Water Resource Management, and the Utilities Department.
