The Opportunity

MLCV (Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures) is seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Assistant Controller to oversee the accounting for various business units including payroll within our diverse business entities. This role is essential in supporting the Controller to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), IRS rules, and company policies.

What You Get to Do

  • Support Financial Reporting: Assist in the preparation, review, and completion of monthly financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and timely delivery.
  • Audit Coordination: Play a key role in facilitating internal and external audits, maintaining robust communication with auditors to ensure efficient audit processes.
  • Operational Support: Work closely with department and operation managers to discuss financial performance, resolve accounting issues, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Financial Oversight: Oversee the accurate recording of banking transactions and ensure effective cash flow management across multiple business units.
  • Payroll Management: Oversee the payroll functions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely processing of payroll transactions.
  • Process Improvement: Drive initiatives to improve processes within the accounting department, enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
  • System Management: Assist in implementing, maintaining, and reviewing business processes within financial systems like Workday, maximizing automation and data processing efficiency.
  • Project Management: Serve in a project manager capacity for the design and implementation of systems related to accounting and finance functions.
  • Strategic Assistance: Assist the Controller and CFO as needed, especially in their absence, ensuring continuity of financial leadership.
  • Perform other departmental duties as assigned to contribute to the overall success and efficiency of the team.

What Qualifies You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution.
  • CPA certification required.
  • Minimum of 8 years progressively responsible related experience in a shared service accounting environment with multiple and different industry business units experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial or controller experience in an organization with revenues in excess of $100 million and/or employees in excess of 500 with multiple entities required.
  • Public accounting experience preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and GASB, including financial statements and disclosure requirements required.
  • Experience writing technical accounting memos to ensure compliance with GAAP and GASB required.
  • Experience with multistate payroll required.
  • Tier 1 ERP experience and implementation of a Tier 1 ERP preferred.
  • Experience coordinating   external financial statement audits and relationship with auditors for the annual financial audits required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with Workday or other financial systems required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with executives and community leaders.
  • Must be able to secure a license from the Gaming Regulatory Authority.
  • Must be able to secure license from Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA).
  • Responsible for following all relevant Detailed Gaming Regulations (DGR’s).
  • Mille Lacs Band Member and American Indian preference will be exercised in the hiring process.

Work Environment

This position offers a combination of remote and in-office work, with in-person meetings and training as required.
