The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks applications and nominations for an experienced, strategic, business-minded hospitality leader with a deep commitment to the highest service standards to serve as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Housing & Hospitality.

As one of the largest premier university housing and hospitality departments in the country, the UCLA Housing and Hospitality team strives to meet its bi-partite mission of "Transforming UCLA from a Commuter to Residential Campus" and "Creating Environments that Empower People to Reach Their Fullest Potential" with a vision of “Hospitality First!” that is reflective of its organizational culture. The emphasis on “First!” represents the unwavering commitment to delivering the highest-quality residential, dining and hospitality services of any public institution in the world.

Over the past decade, UCLA has constructed or renovated more than 10 million square feet of residential and dining spaces. It was the first public institution to guarantee four years of housing to incoming freshmen and is proud to have the nation’s No. 1 dining program nine out of the last ten years, as rated by students on Niche.com. The Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center (LCC) and Lake Arrowhead Lodge carry the highest rated services scores in their relative competitive sets. The LCC’s competitive set is comprised of luxury and upper upscale hotels from Beverly Hills to Westwood and Santa Monica., and its dedication to excellence has helped earn UCLA’s Housing and Hospitality the privilege of welcoming the world’s best sports competitors as host of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Athletes’ Village.

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Administration, the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Housing & Hospitality (H&H) provides the vision and strategic leadership for an expansive, high-quality portfolio of self-supporting auxiliary services with an annual operating budget of more than $570M and approximately 2,600 team members. The AVC H&H ensures the long-term financial viability of the enterprise, develops policy and is responsible for directing and controlling activities for the following functional areas: on-campus student housing and residential dining services (over 15,000 student residents and 7 million meals annually); university apartments (10,000 residents in over 5,000 off-campus apartments at 30 separate locations); faculty housing (197 apartments, condos, and single family homes for faculty and staff families located off campus), and a large hospitality enterprise. The hospitality enterprise includes the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center (the four star/four diamond 254 guest room hotel, with more than 25,000 square feet of meeting space, and a full-service restaurant on-site), the Lake Arrowhead Lodge and UCLA Bruin Woods Family Resort (a variety of accommodations including single rooms, condolets, full chalets, and single family homes accommodating up to 400 people daily during peak season and up to 200 guests during the lodge and conference season), the Inn at UCLA (61-room boutique hotel); UCLA Conference Services; UCLA Catering; UCLA Vending (serving more than 300 campus locations and managing the UCLA Coffee Service), and the UCLA University Club (provides meeting and dining space to membership made up of faculty, staff, and administration).

The ideal candidate will have a broad and deep understanding of, and experience in, hospitality property and food management, including operations of multi-site properties with high-quality multi-location dining operations. A demonstrated ability to financially manage multi-million-dollar operations successfully, including planning, budgeting, analyzing and responding to variances impacting the financial plan is critical. The successful candidate’s experience will reflect a track record of leading high-performing teams, including setting a vision and leading the team to achieve its goals. The successful candidate will also demonstrate evidence of the ability to identify appropriate long-range objectives based on accumulated data and benchmarking and realize those objectives through tactical planning and effective execution.

Politically savvy, emotionally intelligent, entrepreneurial individuals who are skilled in negotiation, exchanging ideas with others to formulate policies and programs, and who thrive in a collaborative environment will be well-positioned for success. The next AVC H&H will be only the fourth leader to take the helm of UCLA’s Housing and Hospitality enterprise since its inception 60 years ago. As such, it is imperative that the next leader is also an individual of the highest integrity who values people, a hospitality-first approach and is deeply committed to creating a positive and uplifting culture of caring, inclusion and excellence that will ensure the continued elevation of the program in the decades ahead. A bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and multiple years of increasing responsibilities is required.
