The North West Company Naujaat

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Naujaat, NU, are a testament to our commitment. Located on the north end of Repulse Bay, Naujaat is home to the Aivilingmiut people, direct descendants of the ancient Thule people, who are renowned for their dog teams and walrus hunting skills. Naujaat is Inuktitut for “seagull resting place”, named after a nearby cliff where newborn seagulls hatch each June. Today, Naujaat is known for its thriving Arctic wildlife, along with it being the closest community to Ukkusiksalik National Park – a site rich with archaeological sites dating back to 1000 AD. Naujaat is home to 1,075 residents (according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census) who speak Inuktitut and English, and can only be reached through air, via Naujaat Airport (formerly known as Repulse Bay Airport).
