In 1924, Southern Surety, an insurance company, purchased and occupied Des Moines’ first skyscraper near the Polk County Courthouse and named it the Southern Surety Building. The unique and ornate Beaux Arts Classical architecture is reflective of a prosperous time in Des Moines. The burgeoning town was known as “The City of Certainties,” and heralded as the financial and insurance center of the Midwest. Today, we embark on a new era of prosperity in the area.
