Job Summary

The Engineer I is a developing general maintenance technician responsible for supporting the safe, comfortable, and efficient operation of Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman Resort & Spa. The role responds to guest room maintenance requests, performs scheduled preventive maintenance, conducts routine inspections, and completes basic repairs across the resort. The Engineer I develops practical capability across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, mechanical, and general building systems while performing work within demonstrated competence and escalating complex, high-risk, or specialized technical issues as appropriate.

Job Duties & Functions

  • Respond promptly and professionally to guest room maintenance requests and complete routine pre-arrival room inspections.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and routine repairs in guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, plant areas, and other resort facilities.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and repairs across plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, mechanical, fixtures, furniture, and general building systems within demonstrated competence.
  • Identify and escalate complex, high-risk, specialized, or unresolved technical issues to a more experienced or appropriately qualified Engineering colleague.
  • Conduct routine plant and equipment inspections and accurately record assigned utility readings, including electricity, water, and gas.
  • Perform assigned domestic water-quality testing and maintain accurate testing and inspection records.
  • Support pool and water-feature operations, chemical testing, and basic maintenance when appropriately trained and authorized.
  • Complete minor carpentry, painting, furniture, fixture, and general property repairs to maintain resort presentation and functionality.
  • Maintain accurate work orders and records of preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs performed, parts used, and outstanding maintenance requirements.
  • Respond appropriately to equipment failures, alarms, power interruptions, leaks, and other maintenance situations in accordance with established procedures.
  • Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, materials, and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain tools, chemicals, hazardous materials, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Assist more experienced Engineering colleagues and Engineering leadership with major repairs, special projects, preventive maintenance activities, and general building upkeep.
  • Interact professionally with guests and colleagues and minimize disruption while maintenance work is being completed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safety by following all company safety policies and applicable OSHA standards, using required PPE, reporting hazards, and promoting a culture of safety throughout the team.

Education & Experience

Candidates Must Meet At Least One Of The Following Qualification Pathways

Pathway 1: High school diploma or equivalent and 1-2 years of relevant experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, Engineering, or a relevant skilled trade.

Pathway 2: Certificate, diploma, or recognized vocational/technical qualification in Engineering, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, carpentry, facilities maintenance, or a related technical discipline and at least 1 year of relevant practical experience.

Pathway 3: Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or higher qualification in Engineering, Facilities Management, Building Services, or a related technical discipline and relevant practical, internship, apprenticeship, or work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential technical functions of the position.

Regardless of qualification pathway, candidates must demonstrate basic practical knowledge of building systems, safe use of common hand and power tools, basic troubleshooting ability, and the ability to recognize when a technical issue requires escalation.

Luxury hotel or resort experience is preferred.

Relevant certifications in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, pool operations, or another applicable trade are advantageous. OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training is preferred. A valid driver’s license is required where driving is an essential function of the position.

Working Conditions & Environment

Work is performed throughout the resort, including guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, plant and mechanical rooms, service areas, elevated areas where required, and exterior areas. The role may involve exposure to Cayman heat and weather, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, odors, chemicals, oils, wet surfaces, moving mechanical equipment, electrical systems, ladders, and other operational hazards. Appropriate PPE and established safety procedures must be followed at all times.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; climb stairs and ladders; balance; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach; push and pull; grasp and safely use hand and power tools; visually inspect equipment and small defects; and lift and move objects weighing 50 lbs. or more, with or without reasonable accommodation.
