About this job...

The Maintenance Engineer / Groundskeeper plays an instrumental role in maintaining the overall functionality, safety, appearance, and upkeep of the hotel and its surrounding property. This dual-role position is responsible for both the maintenance and repair of the hotel’s building systems and equipment, as well as the care and appearance of the hotel’s exterior grounds.

This position tackles routine maintenance challenges, completes preventative maintenance, responds to guest and operational needs, and ensures the hotel’s exterior areas remain clean, safe, attractive, and well maintained throughout the year. The Maintenance Engineer / Groundskeeper is expected to proactively identify maintenance and groundskeeping needs and take appropriate action to maintain the property to hotel and brand standards.

What you'll be doing...

  • Proactively maintain the physical building structure, building systems, guest rooms, public areas, and equipment by performing preventative and routine maintenance.
  • Complete needed or assigned building, equipment, and guest room repairs, including but not limited to plumbing, painting, carpentry, sheetrock, minor electrical work, fixtures, doors, and general repairs.
  • Regularly inspect the hotel property to identify maintenance, safety, cleanliness, and appearance concerns before they negatively impact guests or hotel operations.
  • Maintain the hotel’s exterior grounds, landscaping, parking areas, sidewalks, entrances, loading areas, and other outdoor spaces.
  • Perform routine groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, edging, weed removal, leaf and debris removal, watering, and general landscaping upkeep.
  • Maintain flower beds, shrubs, trees, mulch, and other landscaped areas to ensure the property presents a clean and professional appearance.
  • Pick up litter and debris throughout the property and ensure exterior trash receptacles and surrounding areas remain clean and orderly.
  • Maintain sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, exterior lighting areas, entrances, and other exterior spaces for cleanliness, appearance, and potential safety hazards.
  • Perform seasonal grounds maintenance, including leaf removal, storm cleanup, snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, parking areas
  • Effectively communicate with hotel departments to ensure timely response and completion of maintenance needs.
  • Listen to guests and empathize with their concerns. When necessary, notify the appropriate department and take action to resolve maintenance-related guest issues.
  • Assist with custodial, setup, moving, and other property-related projects as needed or assigned.
  • Always maintain professionalism consistent with hotel brand and company expectations.
  • Know, maintain, and communicate hotel emergency procedures and assist guests and hotel operations during emergency situations.
  • Perform additional maintenance, groundskeeping, and operational duties as assigned based on the needs of the hotel.

Requirements...

Experience & Education:

  • 2+ years of maintenance, facilities, groundskeeping, landscaping, or related experience preferred; hotel or similar facility experience is a plus.
  • High School diploma or equivalency education certificate required.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance, basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and repair work preferred.
  • Experience operating lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, and general maintenance equipment preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in the primary language used in the workplace.

Physical:

  • Ability to stand and walk frequently throughout an 8+ hour workday, including throughout the hotel building and exterior property.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and pivot frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Lift, lower, push, pull, carry, and maneuver up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical activities associated with mowing, trimming, shoveling, snow removal, landscaping, and general property maintenance.
