Job Title: Assistant Director of Operations (Hospitality / Residential Operations)
Location: Washington, DC (Capitol Hill)
Position Type: Full-time, On-site
Position Summary
Lead Operations. Build Community. Preserve a Legacy.
We are seeking an experienced, highly organized, and service-oriented Assistant Director of Operations to serve as the organization's senior operational leader. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys combining hospitality, facilities management, customer service, team leadership, and nonprofit mission-driven work. Much like the General Manager or Assistant GM of a boutique hotel, the Assistant Director will oversee the daily operations of Thompson-Markward Hall (TMH), ensuring an exceptional resident experience while maintaining a historic property, supervising staff, and ensuring strong financial and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Lead the day-to-day operations of Thompson-Markward Hall by fostering a welcoming, supportive, and community-focused living environment.
- Team Supervision: Supervise, mentor, and schedule the Resident Services Manager and the Front Desk and Housekeeping Manager.
- Occupancy & Guest Services: Oversee resident services, applications, short/long-term reservations, occupancy management, move-ins, and move-outs.
- Process Optimization: Translate organizational goals, policies, and contractual requirements into effective operating procedures.
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor operational performance and recommend improvements that strengthen safety, service quality, accountability, and cost efficiency.
- Visible Leadership: Maintain a visible presence within the facility and respond promptly to operational concerns raised by residents, employees, contractors, community partners, and visitors.
- Service Excellence: Ensure exceptional customer service, community standards, and resident satisfaction.
- Facilities & Vendor Management: Oversee maintenance requests, vendor relationships, building systems, and historic facility improvements.
- Project Coordination: Coordinate day-to-day operational activities alongside planned renovation and construction projects.
- Financial Oversight: Monitor resident accounts, operational expenses, payroll processes, and financial reporting.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure operational compliance, safety protocols, emergency preparedness, and organizational standards.
- Strategic Partnership: Partner closely with the Executive Director to help advance TMH's mission and strategic goals.
What We Are Looking For (Ideal Hospitality Profile)
- Experience: 5+ years of operational leadership experience, ideally blending Hotel Assistant General Manager (AGM), Front Office Manager, or high-end Residential Property Manager backgrounds with facilities exposure.
- The "Hospitality Mindset": A deep passion for guest/resident satisfaction, service standards, and building a warm community culture.
- Historic Facility Familiarity: Experience or comfort dealing with older/historic properties, building systems (HVAC, plumbing, security), and coordinating with maintenance technicians or third-party vendors.
- Systems Savvy: Experience with property management systems (PMS), reservation tools, or property tech software.
- Leadership Style: An empathetic, proactive leader who leads by example on the floor, not just from behind a desk.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Thompson-Markward Hall complies with the ADAAA and considers reasonable accommodations measures may be necessary for eligible employees to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Primary functions involve the ability to work primarily on-site in a residential facility operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week and to move throughout the facility, including residential rooms, offices, common areas, stairways, storage areas, and exterior spaces.
- Ability to remain stationary, operate standard office equipment, and communicate effectively for extended periods.
- Ability to lift or move supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to respond to urgent operational matters outside standard business hours. Requires schedule flexibility including some occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage.
- May be exposed to challenging behaviors, crisis situations, inclement weather, and other conditions associated with a residential environment.
- Reasonable accommodation will be provided to qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable law.
