We are seeking an experienced Assistant General Manager to join the opening leadership team of the first and flagship Canopy hotel in New York City.
Located in the heart of the Penn District, at the corner of 34th Street and 8th Avenue, this 365-room, design-forward lifestyle hotel will feature extensive food & beverage offerings and serve as a brand showcase for Canopy in NYC, steps from Madison Square Garden and Hudson Yards.
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Assistant General Manager will play an integral role in the hotel's pre-opening, launch, and ongoing operations. This position is ideal for a hands-on hospitality leader with strong Food & Beverage and hotel operations experience who is passionate about building high-performing teams, delivering exceptional guest experiences, and fostering a positive, collaborative workplace culture.
The Assistant General Manager will partner closely with the General Manager and Department Leaders to ensure the hotel achieves its operational, financial, guest satisfaction, team member engagement, and brand performance goals.
This position requires flexible scheduling availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
What You Will Be Doing
- Support the General Manager in all aspects of the hotel's pre-opening, launch, and ongoing operations.
- Assist with pre-opening recruitment, onboarding, training, operational readiness, and team engagement initiatives.
- Help build and sustain a people-centered culture grounded in teamwork, accountability, trust, respect, and exceptional service.
- Provide leadership and operational oversight across Rooms, Food & Beverage, Front Office, Housekeeping, and other hotel departments.
- Partner with Department Leaders to establish and maintain service standards consistent with Canopy brand expectations.
- Ensure departments achieve or exceed guest satisfaction, quality assurance, and service performance goals.
- Maintain a highly visible presence throughout the hotel and actively engage with guests and team members.
- Inspect guestrooms and public areas regularly with department leaders to ensure cleanliness, presentation, maintenance, and brand standards are consistently maintained.
- Work closely with Food & Beverage leadership to support the successful operation of the hotel's extensive F&B offerings.
- Assist Department Leaders with team member scheduling based on business levels, budgets, productivity goals, and forecasts.
- Support recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, coaching, and team member development.
- Foster an environment where team members feel supported, empowered, and encouraged to grow.
- Participate in and lead daily leadership meetings, including reporting on guest satisfaction scores, operational priorities, and key performance metrics.
- Respond appropriately and promptly to guest concerns, reviews, and inquiries across applicable channels.
- Ensure operational teams are properly trained on financial controls for cash handling, payables, receivables, inventory, purchasing, and other established procedures.
- Participate in the development and management of annual revenue, expense, labor, and capital budgets.
- Monitor departmental performance against budgets and forecasts and partner with leaders to address variances.
- Assist with the oversight of vendor relationships and operational contracts throughout the hotel.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure seamless communication and efficient hotel operations.
- Support team recognition and incentive programs that promote engagement, performance, and retention.
- Serve as Manager on Duty as needed and act on behalf of the General Manager in their absence.
- Maintain strong knowledge of the Penn District and surrounding New York City attractions, restaurants, entertainment, and transportation to enhance the guest experience.
The Ideal Candidate
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience as a hotel Department Manager or comparable senior operational role in a hotel with 200+ rooms required.
- Previous Food & Beverage management or significant F&B operational experience required.
- Experience in full-service, lifestyle, or luxury hotels strongly preferred.
- Pre-opening or new hotel opening experience preferred.
- Previous New York City hotel experience strongly preferred.
- Major hotel brand experience preferred; Hilton or Canopy experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, develop, and motivate diverse teams.
- Strong understanding of hotel operations, guest service standards, financial controls, labor management, and budgeting.
- Experience creating schedules, interviewing and selecting candidates, processing or reviewing payroll, managing inventories, and coaching and counseling team members.
- Experience preparing, reviewing, and managing departmental budgets and forecasts.
- Ability to operate hotel PMS, POS, and applicable accounting or operational systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly motivated, solutions-oriented leader with strong initiative and sound judgment.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and remain effective in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Proven ability to anticipate, identify, and resolve operational and guest-related challenges.

Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this position is $105,000–$115,000 per year.
