We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Sales to join the pre-opening leadership team of the first and flagship Canopy hotel in New York City.
Located in the heart of the Penn District, at the corner of 34th Street and 8th Avenue, this 365-room, design-forward lifestyle hotel will feature extensive food & beverage offerings and serve as a brand showcase for Canopy in NYC, steps from Madison Square Garden and Hudson Yards.
The Director of Sales will develop and execute the hotel's comprehensive sales strategy throughout pre-opening and beyond. This leader will establish the hotel's presence in the New York City market, build key client relationships, identify new business opportunities, and drive revenue across targeted market segments.
Working closely with the General Manager, Revenue Management, Marketing, Food & Beverage, and Operations teams, the Director of Sales will play an integral role in positioning the hotel for a successful opening and long-term commercial performance.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, strategic, and relationship-driven sales leader with extensive knowledge of the New York City hotel market and a proven track record of growing revenue, market share, and account production.
What You Will Be Doing
- Lead the development and execution of the hotel's pre-opening and ongoing sales strategy, establishing the property within the highly competitive New York City market.
- Develop and execute strategic sales plans designed to achieve or exceed hotel revenue, occupancy, ADR, and market share objectives.
- Identify, prospect, qualify, and secure new business across key market segments, including corporate, group, business travel, entertainment, leisure, and other relevant opportunities.
- Build a strong account base before opening and develop strategies to drive immediate and long-term revenue.
- Build and maintain relationships with key corporate accounts, meeting planners, travel partners, local businesses, community partners, and other demand generators.
- Leverage the hotel's premier Penn District location, proximity to Madison Square Garden, Hudson Yards, Penn Station, and surrounding businesses to identify and capture revenue opportunities.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the hotel's competitive set and maintain strong knowledge of NYC market trends, demand generators, new developments, and competitor strategies.
- Conduct regular sales calls, presentations, site inspections, entertainment, networking, and industry events to promote the hotel and generate new business.
- Develop account strategies designed to increase penetration, production, retention, and customer loyalty.
- Manage and grow existing accounts while continuously prospecting for new revenue opportunities.
- Partner closely with Revenue Management to evaluate pricing, demand, pace, market conditions, and business opportunities.
- Collaborate with Marketing to develop campaigns, promotions, partnerships, and positioning strategies that increase hotel awareness and generate demand.
- Partner with Food & Beverage and Operations leadership to identify opportunities to maximize group, event, and ancillary revenue.
- Participate in developing the hotel's annual sales and revenue goals, budgets, forecasts, and strategic business plans.
- Monitor sales production and performance against established goals, and implement action plans as needed.
- Prepare and present sales reports, forecasts, account production, market intelligence, and other performance metrics to the General Manager and company leadership.
- Establish sales processes, procedures, account management standards, and reporting expectations during the pre-opening phase.
- Recruit, develop, coach, and lead members of the Sales team as appropriate, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, and achievement.
- Establish individual and team sales goals and regularly evaluate performance against established objectives.
- Ensure timely and professional follow-up on all leads, tentative business, proposals, contracts, and client correspondence.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date account, activity, and production information in the hotel's CRM and sales systems.
- Represent the hotel professionally within the local business community and hospitality industry.
- Maintain strong relationships and visibility with Hilton/Canopy brand sales resources and leverage brand channels to maximize revenue opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with company and brand Sales and Catering standards, policies, and procedures.
- Perform other duties and strategic initiatives as assigned by the General Manager.
Essential Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of the New York City hotel market, including key accounts, demand generators, competitive properties, and market segments.
- Demonstrated track record of driving hotel sales, revenue growth, account development, and market share.
- Strong strategic and analytical skills with the ability to translate market data and business trends into actionable sales strategies.
- Proven ability to prospect, qualify, negotiate, and close new business.
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to develop long-term partnerships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, develop, and hold a sales team accountable for results.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced pre-opening environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively across Sales, Revenue Management, Marketing, Operations, and Food & Beverage.
- Strong business acumen and understanding of hotel revenue management, forecasting, budgeting, and financial performance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and hospitality CRM/sales systems such as Delphi or comparable platforms.
- Highly motivated, proactive, solutions-oriented, and results-driven.
- Ability to represent the hotel professionally at client meetings, industry events, networking functions, and community engagements.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of progressive hotel sales experience, with previous experience as a Director of Sales, Director of Sales & Marketing, or senior hotel sales leader strongly preferred.
- Previous New York City hotel sales experience strongly preferred.
- Pre-opening or hotel opening experience strongly preferred.
- Lifestyle, full-service, luxury, or major branded hotel experience preferred.
- Hilton or Canopy brand experience is a plus.
- Experience with a hotel of comparable size and complexity preferred.
- Experience developing and executing sales strategies across multiple market segments.
- Demonstrated experience building new accounts and growing existing business.
- Bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management, Business, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
- Must be a hands-on leader who is comfortable both developing strategy and actively selling in the market.

The anticipated compensation range for this position is $160,000–$170,000 per year. The salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on several factors, including but not limited to relevant hotel sales experience, New York City market experience, brand experience, education, and qualifications.
